This ceramic tile mural was originally installed in 2008 on a playground wall at Hartranft Elementary School in Philadelphia, PA. By 2019, a number of tiles from the lower portion of the mural had fallen off the wall, and more tiles were coming loose. In September of 2019, my colleague Mike Reali and I were hired to repair and restore the damaged piece.
The following photos show our process as we removed the loose tiles, prepared the wall surface, and rebuilt the mural. Since the lower portion of the mural was completely missing, we made custom replacement tiles based on photographs of the original piece. The project was halted in late 2019 and remains in limbo today.
